The Long Island Museum provides cultural and educational experiences for people of all ages featuring exhibitions and programming designed to engage the community and enhance the museum’s position as a cultural destination. The LIM is the only Smithsonian Affiliate on Long Island, and one of just over 200 affiliates nationwide.

The collections of the LIM number over 50,000 objects of national and international importance and reflect the art, history and culture of 19th and 20th century America. The complex comprises nine acres with three modern museum buildings: a Visitor Center/History Museum, an Art Museum which includes two changing exhibition galleries, the Carriage Museum which is home to the finest collection of American horse-drawn transportation artifacts in the nation, and four historic structures, including a one-room schoolhouse and a blacksmith shop.

More than 35,000 visitors enjoy the LIM annually. The museum’s audience includes both Long Island residents and seasonal tourists, participating in programs for adults, senior citizens, families, and children. Programs include workshops, family festivals, concerts, lectures, guided tours, and demonstrations. In addition, interactive education programs provide hands-on experiences that promote a love of learning and appreciation for the value of objects as keys to the past to over 12,000 students each year.
